The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government to take urgent, transparent, and equitable action to halt the ongoing attacks on Christians across the country.
In a statement released on Wednesday, CAN expressed deep concern over the killings and abductions of clergy and lay Christians, particularly in Nigeria’s northern and central regions. The association emphasised that the government must ensure the protection of vulnerable Christian communities and hold perpetrators accountable under the law.
CAN President Daniel Okoh warned against delayed or denied justice for affected communities, stressing that the safety of all citizens, regardless of creed or region, is paramount.
While some international commentators, including American comedian Bill Maher and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, have described the attacks as part of a genocidal campaign against Christians, CAN clarified that it does not classify the situation as genocide. Nevertheless, the association underscored the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further displacement and bloodshed.
“We call on the government to safeguard vulnerable Christian communities from displacement, and ensure that perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” Okoh said.
The group urged federal authorities to act decisively to protect lives and restore confidence among citizens living in high-risk areas, reiterating the importance of equal protection for all Nigerians.
