The candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for Udenu State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mr Hillary Onah, has said his top priority if elected is to sponsor a bill to provide potable water in all the communities lacking water in the constituency.
Onah told THE WHISTLER that some communities in the constituency lack water, hence at risk of contracting water-related ailments.
He said, “My mission in the State House of Assembly will be defined by purposeful, high-impact legislation directly designed to transform the lives of our people. Top among my legislative priorities is sponsoring a bill to declare a state of emergency in the potable water sector. Declaring an emergency on water supply is far more than political rhetoric. The bill will urge the state government to prioritize Udenu’s water infrastructure through emergency funding mechanisms and targeted capital allocation.”
He said through legislation, Enugu State Water Corporation, the Enugu State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (ENRUWASA), and key WASH stakeholders would be mandated to submit an immediate technical timeline for the complete reactivation of the Udunedem Greater Water Scheme at Umuezejor, Obollo Afor.
“It is unacceptable that a facility constructed with public resources has sat dormant since its last major renovation in 1996. While this scheme possesses the capacity to supply clean water across Udunedem, Obollo Etiti, parts of Ezimo, Imilike, Orba and Amalla, our communities are forced to rely on streams and unsafe boreholes,” Onah said.
