Businesswoman Doris Nkumah, popularly known as Wannebabybee, has criticised the state of Nollywood, urging Nigerian filmmakers to slow down production and focus on making quality movies instead of releasing rushed, low-budget projects.
In a series of posts shared on Instagram, Nkumah said many filmmakers now produce numerous movies in a short period, leaving little room for creativity and quality storytelling. According to her, audiences can easily identify the same actors, locations, makeup artists and production teams across different films.
She wrote:
“Dear Nigerian filmmakers, since y’all have become film makers, please try to make good movies, get a good story. I want to believe there are millions of places you can get a good story from, just use good locations. Nigeria has beautiful sets, beautiful places for God sake, use quality cameras too. We are human beings with sense spending our hard-earned time to watch these movies.”
She also questioned why many productions appear repetitive.
“Take time to make movies. If actor 1 or 2 are y’all, okay, even on YouTube. I watch every other month or every 3 months in a day, just so you can take your time to plan, give people a good watch and maintain standards.”
Nkumah further complained that many movies feature the same actors, filming locations, makeup artists and production crew, making it difficult for viewers to enjoy something fresh.
She added that low budgets should not be an excuse for poor production quality.
“If you don’t have enough money for the movie, hold on or reach out to people for sponsorship… I beg o I dey. And thanks for wasting my weekend. All hopes, always hopes. Put your feet down and do a good movie pls. Everything is same low budget rushed film. Rush rush.”
