Former Nigerian international and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has officially announced his retirement from professional football, drawing the curtain on a decade-long career in the South African Premier League.
39-year-old Akpeyi made the announcement on Tuesday at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena, during the launch of the 2026 Toyota Cup which he was in, as part of the Kaizer Chiefs legends squad for the exhibition curtain-raiser against the Jozi Masters in July.
“I have retired from active football,” Akpeyi confirmed. “It feels exciting to be part of this legends team. I am privileged to be here so soon, and I am grateful for the opportunity.”
The Nigerian shot-stopper, who arrived in South Africa in 2015 from Warri Wolves, became a stalwart of the local game. Across his ten-year tenure in the PSL, he represented Chippa United, Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows, and Marumo Gallants, racking up over 220 appearances and keeping 77 clean sheets.
His most prolific stint came at Chippa United, where his consistent form earned him a high-profile move to Naturena. Though he did not lift major silverware during his time with the Glamour Boys, his presence at the club cemented his status as a recognisable figure in the South African top flight.
On the international stage, Akpeyi earned 19 caps for the Super Eagles. He was a key figure during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, where he served as the first-choice goalkeeper for a Nigerian side that secured a bronze medal.
