The Elective National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Saturday ratified the expulsion of several high-profile members, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose; and the suspended National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
Also expelled were former National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade SAN; Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; George Turner; Hon Umar Bature; Alaba Turnah; AbdulRahman Mohammed; Austin Nwachukwu; Abraham Ammah and Dan Orbih.
The motion for the expulsion of Wike and the others was moved by former Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Olabode George, who accused the affected members of engaging in activities aimed at undermining and destabilising the party. The motion was seconded by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. According to party leaders, the decision received overwhelming support from delegates, reflecting what they described as a renewed commitment to restoring discipline and protecting the unity of the PDP ahead of future electoral contests.
Earlier in the proceedings, the Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee, Senator Ben Obi, moved a motion to formally declare the gathering an Elective National Convention. The motion was seconded by Mr Emmanuel Enoidem SAN and subsequently adopted by the delegates.
In another major decision, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde moved the motion for the ratification and confirmation of Executive Committees and party structures in states where congresses had been conducted in line with the PDP constitution and monitored by INEC and security agencies. The motion excluded Imo, Abia, Enugu and Rivers states. Mr Daniel Obiechina Okechukwu seconded the motion.
The convention also moved a motion to dissolve the current National Working Committee of the party. Delegates similarly considered and adopted motions for the amendment of several sections of the PDP constitution as part of broader efforts to reposition the party.
Party leaders said the decisions taken at the convention mark a turning point in efforts to stabilise the PDP, resolve longstanding internal conflicts and strengthen its organisational structure ahead of national elections.
