FG Releases Eight-Month Salary Arrears to SSANU, Averts Fresh University Strike

The Federal Government has released eight months’ salary arrears owed members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), in a move aimed at preventing another disruption to academic activities across federal universities.

The payment follows a 14-day ultimatum issued by SSANU, which had demanded the immediate settlement of outstanding salary arrears linked to the implementation of the 2026 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/SSANU agreement.

The development comes amid renewed concerns over unresolved financial obligations to university workers and the potential impact of delayed payments on industrial harmony in the nation’s university system.

SSANU had warned that failure by the Federal Government to honour its commitment within the stipulated period could trigger industrial action.

The release of the eight-month arrears is expected to ease tensions between the government and the non-academic university staff union, while attention now shifts to the full implementation of the agreement and other outstanding issues affecting university workers.
