The Federal Government and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities have signed the renegotiated 2009 agreement, bringing to a close years of discussions between both parties.
The agreement was signed on Monday at the National Universities Commission headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking after the signing, the National President of SSANU, Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, described the development as a major milestone in the union’s quest for improved welfare and better working conditions for senior non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities.
According to him, the agreement reflects years of dialogue, advocacy and engagement between the union and the Federal Government.
He noted that the agreement covers key issues, including improved conditions of service, salary review, CONTA adjustment, fair remuneration and greater recognition of the role played by senior non-teaching staff in the university system.
While welcoming the agreement, Ibrahim urged the Federal Government to begin its implementation without delay.
He stressed that the union would remain united and vigilant to ensure that all provisions of the agreement were fully implemented without discrimination or unnecessary delays.
The SSANU president described the signing as a victory for dialogue, perseverance and organised labour, adding that the real success would be measured by the faithful implementation of the agreement.
