The Federal Government has launched a N10bn healthcare intervention programme aimed at improving access to quality medical services for about 45 million Nigerians across the country.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed this on Saturday during the distribution of medical equipment, ambulances, drugs and other consumables at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi State.
Pate said the intervention, being implemented in partnership with state governments, forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, improve service delivery and address gaps in human resources for health.
According to him, the programme has already led to the rehabilitation of health facilities, the upgrade of diagnostic centres, the supply of modern medical equipment and the training of frontline healthcare workers, including midwives and specialist medical personnel.
He explained that the latest phase of the intervention includes the deployment of ambulances, suction machines, labour and delivery room equipment, neonatal intensive care facilities, essential drugs and other medical consumables to primary and secondary healthcare facilities nationwide.
The minister also announced that 17,000 pregnant women would receive free safe delivery packs containing essential childbirth materials, while medicines would be provided at no cost under the initiative.
Pate said the intervention was designed to reduce maternal and infant mortality, expand access to quality healthcare services and strengthen emergency response capacity across health facilities.
He commended healthcare workers for their dedication despite the challenges confronting the sector, assuring them of the Federal Government’s continued commitment to investing in healthcare infrastructure, equipment and workforce development.
The minister added that ongoing reforms in the health sector were also expected to create employment opportunities for young Nigerians while enhancing the overall quality of healthcare services across the country.
He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to sustain investments aimed at making quality and affordable healthcare accessible to millions of Nigerians.
