LASEMA said a container-laden truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion and lost control before crashing into three other vehicles.
Five vehicles were involved in a crash at Otedola Bridge, inward Berger, Lagos, on Wednesday afternoon, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said.
The vehicles involved were a truck carrying a generator, a containerised truck with registration number ENU 135ZG, a loaded trailer with an unknown registration number, a white Honda with registration number LSR 870BF and a Lexus with registration number KTU 682HX.
LASEMA stated that its LRT Tiger Squad stationed at C3 was alerted to the crash at 1:18 p.m. and arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later.
The agency said the container-laden truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion and lost control before crashing into three other vehicles.
Another truck later rammed into the vehicles, causing further collisions.
LASEMA revealed that its emergency responders, working with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force, secured the scene and controlled traffic around the area.
Paramedics treated those involved in the crash at the scene before taking them to the Trauma Centre for further medical attention.
Recovery operations were ongoing, with private towing trucks and a crane deployed to remove the damaged vehicles and ease traffic.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, commended the emergency responders and other agencies involved in the operation.
He urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated and other heavy-duty vehicles, to maintain their vehicles regularly, obey road safety rules and exercise caution on major highways.
LASEMA also advised residents to report emergencies through the 767 or 112 toll-free lines.
Separately, in a post on X, the police also confirmed that no one died as a result of the accident.
“Five (5) individuals have so far been successfully rescued; no fatality has been recorded as of this time, while the evacuation of the vehicles involved is ongoing.
“Efforts are also ongoing to reopen the road to motorists. The Command urges motorists to exercise patience, cooperate with emergency responders and exercise caution while using the route,” the police wrote.
The Otedola Bridge crash occurred a day after a 40-foot container-laden truck crashed into demarcation blocks and other vehicles at the exit of Kara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
LASTMA stated that the truck reportedly suffered brake failure.
The crash happened while repairs were ongoing on damaged expansion joints on Kara Bridge. The Federal Government’s two-week repair programme is scheduled to run from 8 to 22 September, with traffic restrictions around the bridge and adjoining sections of the expressway.
