A 35-year-old man identified as Ibrahim Mandella has reportedly drowned after he was swept away by flood in the Adehun area of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Mandella, a native of Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State, was reportedly returning home after work around Ijero when he stopped at a car wash in Adehun during a heavy downpour.
According to his brother, Dauda Daniel, Mandella was at the car wash when his wife called him to return home. He reportedly told people around him that he could cross the flood, but was subsequently swept away beneath a narrow bridge.
His remains were later found opposite the highway, near the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries junction in Adehun.
Recounting her final conversation with her husband, his wife, Favour Mary, said she spoke with him twice at about 10:45 p.m. and he assured her that he would return home shortly.
She said Mandella also sent her ₦4,500 for dinner before she went to bed with their two children.
However, Favour said she woke up around 4 a.m. and realised that her husband had still not returned.
The tragedy has further heightened concerns over the recurring flooding in parts of Ado-Ekiti, particularly during heavy rainfall, with residents frequently raising concerns about drainage infrastructure, waterways and flood-prone crossings.
Mandella was said to have been working in the area before the incident that claimed his life.
