The Federal Fire Service, FFS, FCT Command, has warned residents against flooding, urging them to take necessary precautions as rainfall intensifies across the territory.
The warning is contained in a statement by the Command’s Spokesperson, Barnabas Anyam, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Mr Anyam quoted the FFS Controller, Muhammed Anas, as urging residents to intensify vigilance particularly in low-lying areas, riverbanks and communities with poor drainage systems.
Mr Anas noted that at times human activities often worsen flooding, while emphasising that protecting lives and property remained a shared responsibility between residents and relevant authorities.
He identified indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages, canals and waterways as major human activities capable of obstructing water flow and worsening flooding.
The controller warned against building on floodplains, waterways and drainage channels, as well as blocking drainage systems with structures, kiosks and shops.
He also cautioned residents against sand dredging and indiscriminate excavation near rivers and streams.
“Stop constructing buildings without approved plans or adequate drainage provisions,” he also warned.
He advised residents to regularly clear drains, gutters and surroundings of refuse and debris.
Mr Anas also urged residents to monitor weather forecasts and heed to flood alerts from relevant authorities.
“Residents will do well to immediately contact the FFS or other emergency responders for assistance during flooding and return home only after authorities declare areas safe,” he said.
