A Florida city has issued more than 44,000 tickets to motorists speeding through its school zones in less than one year.
The tickets were given for violations around Tallahassee schools from September 2025 to late May 2026, news outlet WCTV reported, citing public records.
Cameras are now used to enforce speed limits during the school day as part of the city’s School Zone Speed Enforcement Program, created in a Florida house bill passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in May 2023.
Drivers going more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit are issued a “Notice of Violation,” including the date, time, location and photo evidence of the violation, according to city officials.
There are 25 school zones in Tallahassee with cameras to catch any speeders.
Ruediger Elementary School and Raa Middle School reportedly had the most tickets issued, with nearly 11,000 violations this school year.
If a car is caught speeding, the registered owner will be mailed a $100 citation, per WCTV.
City officials said a “Notice of Violation” will not affect a driver’s insurance or their license, as it’s a civil penalty.
But if the driver does not do anything about the violation within 30 days of it being issued, they will get a Florida Uniform Traffic Citation.
Drivers who ignore a state traffic citation may have their driving privileges suspended, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Tallahassee isn’t the only city looking to catch speeders around schools.
Officials in Tampa, Florida, voted last week to approve speed detection cameras in 18 school zones, FOX 13 Tampa Bay reported.
The vote came after a RedSpeed traffic study found significant speeding violations at 18 of the 31 school zones in Tampa, according to the outlet.
There was reportedly a daily average of 200 to more than 3,000 violations in each of the 18 school zones.
