- Former President PDP Chairman, Bamanga Tukur died on Saturday, September 12, 2026, according to a statement released by his family and signed by his son, Awwal D. Tukur.
The family referred to the former PDP chairman as a “beloved father and patriarch,” claiming that he dedicated his life to serving his family, community, Adamawa State, and Nigeria.
“It is with profound sadness and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah that the family announces the passing of our beloved father and patriarch, Alhaji Bamanga Mohammed Tukur, who returned to his Creator today, 12th September 2026,” he stated.
The family expressed gratitude for the prayers, sympathies, and support they received following his death.
He stated that specifics about the Janazah, or funeral prayer, and other burial arrangements will be sent later.
“We pray that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, accepts his good deeds and grants him Aljannatul Firdaus,” he said.
Tukur was born on September 15, 1935, and would have been 91 three days after his death.
He was the former governor of the defunct Gongola State and Minister of Industries under the late General Sani Abacha’s military dictatorship.
Tukur was also the General Manager and Chief Executive of the Nigerian Ports Authority, as well as a number of commercial and economic advocacy positions in Africa.
He was appointed National Chairman of the PDP in March 2012, during the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
His stint as PDP chairman coincided with the party’s internal crises, which included the establishment of the “New PDP” faction in 2013.
Tukur stepped down as national chairman in January 2014 and was later appointed Ambassador-at-Large by the Jonathan government.
