Former Ogun State First Lady, Yeye Olufunke Daniel, has been thrown into mourning following the death of her mother, Chief Mrs. Sabainah Ibironke Opawole (née Osoba), who passed away at the age of 93.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the respected matriarch died peacefully on Thursday, July 2, 2026, after a brief illness.
Her passing has plunged both the Opawole and Daniel families into grief, with tributes pouring in from political associates, community leaders, family friends and well-wishers across Ogun State and beyond.
In a statement issued by the family, the late Opawole was described as a devout Christian, a respected matriarch and a woman whose life was defined by humility, faith and unwavering commitment to family values.
Born on April 23, 1933, she was the daughter of Princess Mariam Ladigbolu of the renowned Ladigbolu royal family of the Oyo Kingdom and the late Rev. O. Osoba of Olodo Village in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
She remained a committed member of the Baptist Church throughout her lifetime and was widely admired for her exemplary Christian lifestyle, compassion and dedication to humanity.
Mrs. Opawole is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including Yeye Olufunke Daniel, wife of former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
The family expressed gratitude to God for what it described as a fulfilled and impactful life.
The statement read, “Our beloved mother lived a long, fulfilled and exemplary life dedicated to God, her family and humanity. While we mourn her passing, we are comforted by the remarkable values she instilled in all who came in contact with her and the lasting impact of her life.”
The family also appreciated the outpouring of condolences and prayers from friends, associates and well-wishers, while appealing for continued support during the period of mourning.
It added that funeral arrangements for the deceased would be announced at a later date.
Since news of her death became public, sympathisers have continued to pay glowing tributes, remembering the nonagenarian as a woman of dignity, grace, strength and unwavering faith whose legacy will endure for generations.
