Four people have been killed and one other injured in a road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at Straight Gate, Ogun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed that the fatal crash occurred at about 4am on Wednesday.
Eight persons were involved in the crash, with four male adults killed, one male adult injured and three others escaping unhurt.
The crash involved a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar, with registration number FGE 753 XA, and an ash-coloured HOWO truck, with registration number T-695 KT.
According to the FRSC in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, preliminary investigation indicated that speed violation and wrong overtaking caused the crash.
The agency said the Mitsubishi driver, who was reportedly travelling at high speed, rammed into the moving truck while attempting to overtake.
Fatigue was also identified as a contributing factor, as the driver was reportedly fatigued during the journey.
The FRSC said its rescue team received the report at 4:33am and arrived at the scene at 4:39am, recording a six-minute response time.
The injured victim was rescued and taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara.
The two crashed vehicles were handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation and necessary action.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists to avoid speeding, fatigue and unsafe overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.
He advised drivers to take adequate rest before embarking on long-distance trips and to overtake only when it is safe and permissible.
