The Osun State Police Command has arraigned three suspects before a court over the alleged theft and sale of 300 insecticide-treated mosquito nets meant to be distributed free of charge to residents under a government health intervention programme.
The suspects were identified as Rabbi Bennett, Opeyemi Ajibola and Aminu Ibrahim.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this in a statement issued in Osogbo, saying the suspects had been remanded in a correctional centre after their arraignment.
According to the police, the case began on June 9, 2026, when information was received about the alleged illegal sale of government-owned mosquito nets meant for public distribution.
Ojelabi said preliminary investigation revealed that Rabbi Bennett, a female native of Delta State and a staff member of the United States Agency for International Development, USAID, attached to Ife North Local Government Area, Ipetumodu, allegedly had a dispute with Opeyemi Ajibola, an okada rider from Ayetoro Street, Ipetumodu, over proceeds realised from the unlawful sale of the mosquito nets.
The police said further investigation showed that Bennett, Ajibola and Aminu Ibrahim allegedly sold six bundles containing 300 pieces of mosquito nets on June 8, 2026.
The nets, according to the Command, were originally meant to be distributed free of charge to members of the public as directed under the government’s health intervention programme.
Following the incident, the three suspects were arrested and taken into custody for interrogation.
Ojelabi said the suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the alleged offence during investigation.
“The case has since been charged to court, and all suspects have been remanded at the Correctional Centre pending further judicial proceedings,” the police statement said.
The development comes amid ongoing public health efforts to distribute insecticide-treated nets to households across Osun State as part of measures to reduce malaria transmission.
The police condemned the alleged diversion and sale of the nets, stressing that materials meant for public welfare programmes must not be converted to private use.
The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public resources and ensuring that individuals entrusted with welfare items are held accountable under the law.
It also assured residents that the matter would be followed through the judicial process.
