For Nigerian teenage sensation Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei, that moment arrived with the signing of a professional contract with Portuguese women’s football powerhouse Benfica.
The 18-year-old striker has joined the six-time Portuguese champions on a deal that runs until 2028, with an option to extend for two additional years, marking another significant milestone for Nigerian women’s football and yet another success story for Lagos-based Hallelujah FC Ladies Academy, where her football journey began.
Born on November 6, 2007, Seimeyeha first caught the attention of coaches while developing her game at Hallelujah FC Ladies Academy in Ikeja, Lagos. Blessed with pace, intelligence, composure in front of goal and an eye for creating scoring opportunities, she quickly emerged as one of the academy’s brightest talents.
Her performances soon earned national recognition as she progressed through Nigeria’s youth national teams. She represented the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, showcasing her ability on the global stage. Later that year, she achieved another career milestone when she made her senior debut for the Super Falcons in an international friendly against Algeria.
While many young players struggle to transition from youth football to the senior game, Seimeyeha embraced the challenge with remarkable maturity.
Her breakthrough came during the 2024/25 Nigeria Women’s Football League season with Nasarawa Amazons, where she enjoyed a sensational campaign. Scoring 13 goals in just 19 league appearances, she finished among the league’s leading scorers and was deservedly crowned the NWFL Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Her exploits made her one of the hottest prospects in Nigerian women’s football, prompting a move to Bayelsa Queens, where she continued to impress with her consistency, work ethic and attacking flair.

“I’m happy! Benfica is a great club. It’s a privilege to be here to help the team win trophies and achieve great things.”

“Benfica is a great club—I know that. I want to be part of this family. I’m ready to give my best, help my teammates and achieve our goals for the season.”
The move also carries special significance because of the influence of fellow Nigerian international Christy Ucheibe, whose successful spell with Benfica inspired Seimeyeha long before the opportunity arrived.
Watching Ucheibe win trophies in Portugal convinced the young forward that Benfica was the ideal destination to continue her development.
“Christy Ucheibe plays for the national team. I watched her play for Benfica and win titles. I want to achieve the same. She told me many good things about Benfica.”
Beyond football, Ucheibe also offered words of wisdom that Seimeyeha says she intends to carry throughout her career.
“She told me to stay humble, chase my dreams and always be a good person.”
Those values have been evident throughout Seimeyeha’s rise—from the training grounds of Hallelujah FC Ladies Academy to Nigeria’s biggest domestic clubs and now to one of Europe’s most respected women’s football institutions.
