Portugal players Ruben Dias and Jose Sá have underscored the significance of their forthcoming friendly match against Nigeria as the European team continues its preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A Seleção das Quinas is set to face the Super Eagles at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria next Wednesday, marking their second encounter in four years.
While Dias participated in the first half of Portugal’s 4-0 victory over Nigeria in November 2002, the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper remained an unused substitute.
Portugal is utilizing the friendly against Nigeria to refine their preparations and tactical strategies ahead of their World Cup opener against the Democratic Republic of Congo, who earned their spot in the tournament by narrowly defeating the Super Eagles in the final of the African playoffs.
In anticipation of Portugal’s warm-up matches against Chile and Nigeria, goalkeeper Jose Sá emphasized that both games will be crucial in assisting the squad to fine-tune its preparations prior to the tournament’s commencement.
“These will be two very important games against Chile and Nigeria to prepare for the World Cup. We are focused on giving our best and preparing well for the first game in the competition,” Sá stated to A Bola.
Manchester City center-back Dias, who has been selected for Portugal’s World Cup squad for the third time, echoed Sá’s views and pointed out the unpredictable nature of the tournament.
When questioned about the importance of the friendlies against Chile and Nigeria, considering the differing styles of Portugal’s World Cup opponents, Dias unequivocally affirmed their significance.
“Yes, they will be extremely important. This is my third World Cup and I have already experienced firsthand, in various and different circumstances, the difficulty of playing against anyone in the World Cup,” Dias remarked to A Bola.
Portugal will also compete against Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K of the 2026 World Cup.
