Germany has called on China to use its influence over Iran to help push for a negotiated resolution to rising tensions in the Middle East, the German Foreign Ministry said.
The appeal followed a phone call between German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during which both officials discussed the escalating regional security situation and the need for swift diplomatic solutions.
Berlin said both countries share concerns over potential escalation and expressed support for efforts aimed at restoring stability in the region.
A key point in the discussion was the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical corridors for global oil shipments.
Germany stressed that no single state should control maritime routes or impose transit fees for passage through international waters.
The German Foreign Ministry emphasized that China could play a meaningful role in encouraging Iran to engage in negotiations and in reducing tensions with Gulf states.
The statement signals growing European interest in involving major global powers, including Beijing, in efforts to de-escalate regional conflicts.
The Strait of Hormuz, linking the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, handles roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments, making its security a top international priority.
