For the sixth year in a row, Government Girls’ Secondary School/Methodist Girls’ High School Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Incorporated, GGSS/MGHS Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc. has announced the presentation of twelve financial awards and two scholarships to students at the Methodist Girls’ High School (MGHS), Harbour Road, Port-Harcourt, Nigeria on July 18, 2026.
The awards were presented in the presence of the School and Church council members, including the Bishop of Wesley Cathedral of Grace and Proprietor of MGHS, the Rt. Rev. Stephen Moses Ogolo, the Chairman of the Board of Governors of MGHS, Prof. Jack D. Nwineewil, Education Secretary Board of Governors of MGHS, Elder Dr. Sunny Aziaka, and the Principal of MGHS, Lady Blessing W. Kalio.
Barrister Godwins Amadi, an Honorary Member of GGSS/MGHS Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc. represented the Association. He presented the Alumni Diaspora Excelsior Award to Royal Ojonimi Charles and the Ambassador Elizabeth Bolere Ketebu Science Award to Ibiso Gabriel. Chidinnma Ibe Kalu received the Gladys Gilbert Joybringer Award for her outstanding service to others. The Josephine Jumbo Excellence in History and Literature Award was presented to Favour Godswill Anya. Juliet Amarachi Ono and Urombo Melody Julius each received the Sam Wobo Excellence in Religious Studies Award. The Amil Kim Williamson English Awards were presented to Flourish Tambari, Precious Ndapuwari, Edemenere Udeme, Gift Godwin, Ibiso Merit Gabriel, and Royal Charles. The Association is continuing the Alumni Diaspora Enabler Scholarship awarded to Boma Abigail Kurobo and the Nkem Ahiakwo Memorial Scholarship for Academic Excellence awarded to Valentina Iwamedi Ibama. Following the presentation of the awards, the Rt. Rev. Stephen Moses Ogolo declared a Physics Award for the best student in Physics from next year, “in appreciation of what the Old Girls in the Diaspora are doing”. The Principal, Lady Blessing Kalio thanked the Association and prayed “May the Good Lord continue to prosper the works of your hands in JESUS’ Name, Amen”. Representing the teachers, the school’s new Physics teacher thanked the Association for the good work it has been doing in their school.
The goal of GGSS/MGHS Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc. is to advance the mutual welfare of GGSS/MGHS and its alumni in the Diaspora. As in previous years, the Association’s President, Dr. Anne Medinus Benibo reiterated that “The awards are given towards the attainment of the Association’s third objective, which is to provide opportunities for alumni to remain connected and to serve the school. In fulfillment of the Association’s Cardinal Project number 1, scholarships were awarded to two Indigent students to enable them to stay in school and towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 1: End Extreme Poverty. To empower the future generation of girls and motivate them to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, monetary awards were also given to students who excelled in all areas. This is also in fulfillment of the Association’s Cardinal Project 3 and the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality. We continue to cherish our experiences at GGSS, a public school which evolved into MGHS, a private parochial school.” We appreciate Barrister Amadi for taking the time off his busy schedule to select the awardees based on the Association’s stated criteria and present the awards at the MGHS’ graduation ceremony. Government Girls’ Secondary School/Methodist Girls’ High School Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc. was formed seven years ago, incorporated in January 2020 as a charity organization and became a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in March 2021.
