Former France striker Olivier Giroud, who turns 40 on Wednesday, has revealed that he will “very probably” retire from football at the end of the current season.
The Lille forward became France’s all-time leading goalscorer during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, before being surpassed by Kylian Mbappe earlier this year.
Speaking to L’Equipe, Giroud admitted that he believes the current campaign could be his final season as a professional player.
“As a player, I think it is very probably my last season,” he said.
“That’s why I’m making the most of every moment,” he added.
Giroud has enjoyed a distinguished career, including winning the World Cup with France in 2018.
He scored 57 goals in 137 appearances for the national team.
At club level, he also won league titles in France with Montpellier and in Italy with AC Milan.
His biggest club achievement came with Chelsea, where he helped the London side win the Champions League in 2021. He also won the FA Cup four times, including three triumphs during his time at Arsenal.
Giroud began his professional career in 2006 with Grenoble in the French second division.
His final appearance for France came in 2024.
