Former Lagos State governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has appealed for patience from members of the Obidient movement following backlash over his decision to remain in the African Democratic Congress, ADC, instead of joining the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC.
Rhodes-Vivour made the appeal in a post on X on Friday after some supporters questioned his refusal to move to the NDC alongside Peter Obi and other opposition figures.
Reacting to a strongly worded post by an Obidient supporter identified as @firstladyship, the former governorship candidate acknowledged the concerns and frustrations trailing the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Thank you so much for the love, the support not just for me, for the movement, for H.E Peter Obi, but also for Nigeria. Please believe that I will never ever take the support of the Obidients for granted,” he wrote.
Rhodes-Vivour urged supporters not to rush to conclusions over his political calculations, insisting there were issues he could not yet publicly explain.
“I understand how you feel and how you see things in this moment. I only ask you for a bit of time. There is so much I wish I could explain,” he stated.
The politician also referenced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the Labour Party before the 2023 elections, noting that many doubted the decision at the time.
“I remember how PDP supporters on this App ridiculed and laughed me to scorn when I left to LP in 2022. I remember how that story ended,” he added.
Seeking to reassure members of the Obidient movement of his continued alignment with them politically, Rhodes-Vivour said the relationship would remain strong heading into the next election cycle.
“I only ask that you hold on till the end of the month. I promise you at the end of 2027 we will be closer than we were in 2023,” he said.
His comments came after the supporter warned that remaining in the ADC could damage his political future in Lagos State.
The supporter argued that the ADC lacked the structure needed to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos and suggested that former governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, could emerge as the preferred Obidient candidate if he secures the NDC governorship ticket.
“Should Doherty get the NDC’s gubernatorial ticket for Lagos State, Obidients will vote for him. That’s the much I know!” the supporter wrote.
