Former Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina, was met with a tense atmosphere outside the Cape Town Regional Court on Monday after a group of South African women allegedly confronted her with anti-immigrant remarks and called for her to leave the country.
The beauty queen was at the court as part of her ongoing legal challenge against the Department of Home Affairs’ move to deport her. The matter was postponed, with the next hearing scheduled for August 19.
Adetshina, who was arrested in Cape Town last month over allegations that she had been residing in South Africa without proper legal documentation, has since been fighting through legal channels to remain in the country.
A video that has gone viral on social media showed a group of women gathered outside the court, directing harsh comments towards the former beauty queen.
In the footage, the women could be heard chanting, “Go home. Nigeria is your home. Nigeria is your home. Identity, Steve, we won’t accept those identities you stole in South Africa. I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Go home, Nigeria is your home. We wouldn’t accept you in South Africa.”
The incident has generated widespread reactions online, with many people discussing issues surrounding xenophobia, immigration, and the treatment of foreign nationals in South Africa.
