A former commissioner in Gombe State, Muhammad Ismail City, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress, APC and thrown his weight behind former Communications and Digital Economy Minister, Isa Ali Pantami, for the 2027 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
City, a former chairman of Akko Local Government Area and ex-independent commissioner with the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission, announced his decision after meeting with Pantami at his office.
His resignation and endorsement come as political consultations intensify across Gombe ahead of the 2027 governorship race, with politicians and groups beginning to align themselves with emerging contenders.
In a statement issued on his behalf by Professor Suleiman Mohammed Gombe of the Pantamiyya Movement, City said his experience in grassroots administration and electoral management had given him a clear understanding of the leadership qualities required to govern the state effectively.
He said Gombe was at a critical point in its development and required a leader capable of combining integrity, administrative experience and international exposure with a clear vision for development.
City identified Pantami’s record at the National Information Technology Development Agency, where he served as Director-General, and his subsequent tenure as Minister of Communications and Digital Economy as evidence of his capacity to lead.
He said the former minister’s time in public office demonstrated his ability to pursue institutional reforms, promote innovation and implement strategic development initiatives.
The former commissioner also described Pantami as an internationally recognised scholar whose interests in human capital development and youth empowerment could contribute to the state’s development.
“Having closely monitored the political landscape and the yearnings of our people, I am entirely convinced that Professor Pantami possesses the unique administrative competence and global network needed to elevate Gombe State to unprecedented heights,” City said.
He urged his political associates and other stakeholders, particularly in Akko Local Government, to support Pantami’s governorship bid.
“I unequivocally endorse the gubernatorial candidacy of Professor Isa Ali Pantami. I call upon all my political associates, the stakeholders of Akko Local Government, and the patriotic citizens of Gombe State to join hands and support this noble cause,” he said.
City expressed optimism that a Pantami-led administration would make Gombe more secure and prosperous while promoting unity among its people.
