Gombe Governor Yahaya Warns New Appointees Against Corruption, Poor Performance

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has warned newly appointed commissioners and other political appointees against poor performance, corruption, bureaucratic delays and abuse of office as his administration approaches the end of its tenure.

Yahaya gave the warning while swearing in three commissioners and three special advisers, urging them to focus on delivering results and making effective use of the remaining months of his administration.

The governor said the appointments were intended to strengthen government operations, improve the capacity of public institutions and enhance service delivery across the state.

He explained that the new appointees were selected based on their experience and expertise, expressing confidence that they would deploy their knowledge to implement government policies, programmes and projects effectively.

Announcing their portfolios, Yahaya named Dr Ahmed Wali Doho as Commissioner for Special Duties and Regional Cooperation, Nasiru Adamu Degri as Commissioner for Water Resources, and Dr Muhammad A. Bello as Commissioner for Policy Coordination and Performance Tracking.

The governor also announced a minor cabinet reshuffle, redeploying Alhaji Shehu Yerima Abdullahi to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to fill an existing vacancy.

Yahaya directed the newly appointed commissioners to familiarise themselves with the operations and responsibilities of their respective ministries without delay.

He further instructed them to work closely with permanent secretaries and other senior officials to ensure effective coordination, prudent management of public resources and timely implementation of government decisions.

“I expect each of you to work closely with your Permanent Secretaries and other senior officials to ensure effective coordination, prudent management of resources and timely implementation of government decisions,” he said.

The governor stressed that his administration could not afford inefficiency or complacency at a critical stage of its tenure.

“You must avoid unnecessary bureaucratic delays, strengthen internal accountability and ensure that every available resource is directed towards delivering tangible benefits to our people.

“At this stage of our administration, we have neither the luxury of time nor the resources to accommodate inefficiency, complacency or administrative lapses,” Yahaya added.

He declared that the remaining months of his administration would be marked by intensified efforts to deliver public services, dismissing suggestions that government activities should slow down as the tenure approaches its conclusion.

The governor also urged members of the State Executive Council and other political appointees to build on the achievements recorded since 2019 and ensure that projects, policies and institutions established under his administration continued to benefit residents beyond his departure from office.

Yahaya warned the appointees against corruption, indiscipline, abuse of office and any conduct capable of undermining public confidence in government.

He charged them to uphold accountability, participate in peaceful political activities and respect democratic institutions while discharging their responsibilities.

The governor reiterated the need for commitment and responsible leadership, stressing that the success of his administration would depend on its ability to translate policies and projects into tangible benefits for the people of Gombe State.
