Greggs is set to open its first international branch in Tenerife, offering a range of familiar bakes alongside Spanish fare to cater to local tastes. The popular UK bakery chain will launch its first expansion outside the country in nearly 20 years in the coming months, with a new base at the island’s South Airport enabling Brits to buy its famous sausage rolls while on holiday.
The brand is collaborating with Lagarde Travel Retail to open the new outlet, which will be in the departures area and has been described as a “test” of “spreading our wings in an overseas setting”.
Alongside Greggs’ signature sweet and savoury baked goods, the branch will offer a Spanish Omelette Roll and freshly squeezed orange juice in a bid to “give customers a refreshing taste of island life”. It will target the roughly 13 million UK holidaymakers who travel through the major Spanish airport every year, making up approximately half of the overall footfall.
As well as selling on-the-go fare, the bakery will offer seating for up to 92 customers.
Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie said: “Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting.
“It’s an exciting milestone for Greggs as we bring a slice of home to the Canaries, and we’re confident our great-value offering will resonate just as well under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street.”
Javier Cagigal, chief executive of Lagardere Travel Retail Spain and Portugal, added: “We’re delighted to partner with Greggs to bring such a well-loved brand into Tenerife South Airport for the very first time.”
He added: “As passengers head home, this new opening gives them a familiar, comforting choice in departures – whether that’s a last treat, a relaxed sit-down moment or something to ease the journey home.”
Early success has seen two more sites in Spain earmarked by the hospitality firm to open over the next year in terminals one and two at Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
