Guinea-Bissau handed Nigeria a 3-0 defeat in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L encounter at the 24 de Setembro National Stadium in Bissau on Tuesday, exposing the Super Eagles’ struggles in the match.
The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute when Franculino Djú fired a left-footed shot past Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after Renato Nhaga set him up inside the box.
Nigeria struggled to respond but came close to restoring parity before the break when Alex Iwobi created an opportunity for Ademola Lookman. However, Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé produced a fine save to preserve his side’s advantage.
Guinea-Bissau maintained their attacking threat after the restart and extended their lead in the 65th minute through Mama Baldé.
Baldé collected a pass from Mamadi Camará on the left before sending a low shot into the net to make it 2-0.
The Super Eagles made changes in an attempt to revive their performance, introducing George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi in the 75th minute.
Despite the substitutions, Nigeria failed to find a breakthrough as Guinea-Bissau continued to frustrate their efforts.
Ilenikhena had an opportunity to reduce the deficit in the 85th minute, but Embadjé made another important save to deny the Nigerian forward.
Guinea-Bissau completed the emphatic victory in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló scored their third goal.
Djaló received a through ball from Tamble Monteiro before finishing with his right foot to seal the hosts’ 3-0 win over the Super Eagles.
The defeat leaves Nigeria with work to do in their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, following their 2-1 victory over Madagascar in their previous Group L fixture.
