Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has paid tribute to the late veteran actor Olu Jacobs, describing him as “a National Icon and a source of pride for Nigeria.”
Omokri shared his tribute on X on Wednesday, September 16, following the death of the legendary actor at the age of 84.
Reflecting on Olu Jacobs’ remarkable career, Omokri described him as a trailblazer whose achievements stood out among Nigerian actors of his generation.
He noted that the late actor received his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before building an impressive career across theatre, television and film.
According to Omokri, Olu Jacobs gained international recognition decades ago after featuring in the British television series The Professionals, at a time when Nigerian performers rarely achieved such international visibility.
He also highlighted some of the actor’s international film credits, including The Dogs of War, where he appeared alongside Christopher Walken, and Roman Polanski’s Pirates.
Omokri further described Olu Jacobs and his mentor, the late Chief Hubert Ogunde, as foundational figures in the development of what would later become Nollywood.
He recalled that the late actor had already established an international reputation in the 1970s and early 1980s, long before Nigeria’s homegrown film industry became what it is today.
The ambassador-designate also mentioned Olu Jacobs’ television commercials from that era, describing them as memorable productions that remain nostalgic to many Nigerians.
Despite his extensive contribution to Nollywood, Omokri said Olu Jacobs’ humility allowed others to claim pioneer status that, in his view, did not match their contributions.
He wrote: “Because of the modesty of Ogunde and Jacobs, and especially Mr Jacobs, who starred in hundreds of Nollywood movies, less deserving individuals have made pretences to their title of Nollywood Pioneers, but history makes their claims hollow.”
Omokri expressed his sadness over the passing of the veteran actor and offered his condolences to his family, particularly his wife and fellow actress, Joke Silva, and their children.
He also recalled that Olu Jacobs was honoured with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) award during his lifetime, describing the recognition as fitting for a man who made significant contributions to Nigerian culture.
Concluding his tribute, Omokri bid farewell to the late screen legend, writing: “Adieu, great sir. Until we meet to part no more.”
