Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Ovie Success, has blamed the parents of Favour Agbro, the 20-year-old nursing student who reportedly took her own life after alleging she was raped by an Asaba-based content creator.
In a Facebook post, Ossai said Favour’s parents should have taken immediate steps to ensure she received medical attention and emotional support after she disclosed the alleged assault.
“As a mother, she should have asked her to go to the nearest police station and seek legal support, report to a rape NGO, instead of sending her to meet the man to warn him,” he wrote.
He also criticised those who blamed the victim, saying:
“In a situation like this, you don’t blame the victim first, you do everything possible to help her get treatment as justice.”
According to Ossai, parents and guardians have a primary responsibility to protect their children.
“As parents and guardians, our first responsibility is to protect our children.”
He stressed that victims of sexual assault require urgent medical care, counselling and emotional support, warning that silence and victim-blaming only worsen the trauma.
Ossai also disclosed that he had personally reached out to the father of the content creator, popularly known as Odogwu Asaba, urging him to ensure his son faces justice if found guilty.
“No life should be cut short in such a manner, and there can be no justification for any form of sexual violence.”
The death of Favour has continued to spark outrage across social media, with many Nigerians demanding a thorough investigation into the allegations against the content creator, who remains in police custody as investigations continue.
