Nigerian media personality Tunde Perry has shared the surprising experience that made him lose his admiration for singer May D, despite once considering himself one of the artist’s biggest supporters.
Speaking during a TikTok Live session, Perry recalled attending one of May D’s performances at the New Afrika Shrine in 2012, when the singer was enjoying the peak of his music career.
According to Perry, May D was performing his popular collaboration with P-Square when he removed a gold-coloured chain from his neck and tossed it into the cheering crowd.
Perry said he was fortunate enough to catch the chain and immediately believed it was a valuable piece of jewelry that could change his financial situation.
Speaking in Yoruba, he recounted the moment, saying:
“May D used to be one artist I loved so much. The very day I started hating him was when I went to Fela Shrine to watch him perform in 2012. He threw his gold chain into the crowd and I caught it. I knew the struggle I went through, so at that moment, I thought I was rich already.”
He explained that he guarded the chain carefully throughout the night, too excited to sleep because he feared someone might steal what he believed was a precious item.
However, his excitement was short-lived.
The following day, Perry said he took the chain to an aboki (a local scrap or metal buyer) hoping to sell it, only to receive disappointing news.
Recalling the encounter, he said:
“I rushed to meet an aboki to sell it. The aboki said he couldn’t buy the chain for even ₦200 because it was just condemned iron.”
Perry’s story has since generated mixed reactions across social media. While many users found the incident amusing and laughed at his experience, others questioned the authenticity of the claim and wondered whether the event actually happened as he described.
