Nigerian cleric Pastor Sarah Omakwu has raised concerns over the increasing cost of education and the low salaries being paid to some workers across the country.
Speaking on the rising cost of living, the pastor noted that many schools have increased their fees in response to the economic challenges affecting both institutions and their staff.
According to her, the decision to raise school fees at her own school was largely driven by the need to improve teachers’ salaries and help them cope with the rising cost of transportation and other basic necessities.
“This season of school fees, almost every school has doubled or raised its school fees. Even in our school, we have raised the school fees because we need to increase teachers’ salaries so that they can at least afford transportation.
“Some employers are paying their workers salaries that are simply unacceptable. Can you imagine some people are still receiving ₦50,000 as salary on this current situation?” she said.
Omakwu’s remarks have drawn attention to the growing financial pressure faced by teachers and other low-income workers as the cost of living continues to rise.
Her comments also highlight the difficult balance schools face between keeping education affordable for parents and ensuring that teachers receive salaries that can adequately support them.
