A Nigerian woman has shared her experience after separating from her husband and attempting to live independently with her daughter.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she explained how the rising cost of accommodation and basic living expenses influenced her decision.
According to her, after briefly returning to her village and coming back to the city, she contacted an agent to help her find an apartment, as she planned to move out with her daughter and start afresh.
“So, I contacted the agent whose number I got. I wanted a two-bedroom apartment because I was living with my daughter.
The agent said a two-bedroom apartment is ₦800,000, but I could pay ₦600,000. I said okay, find me a self-contain. He found one and said ₦450,000, but I could pay ₦400,000. He said that was the cheapest I could get in that area,” she said.
She further explained that she checked the prices of basic household items like a bed and fan but was shocked by how expensive everything was, noting that even the cheapest options were beyond her expectations and budget.
Overwhelmed by the cost of living, she said she returned to her husband’s house due to frustration and financial pressure, concluding that life outside was harder than she had imagined.
“I came back to my husband’s house because of how expensive things were. I told my husband, ‘You see this house, I won’t leave it for you—you will leave it for me.’ Now I understand why our mothers don’t leave their marriages,” she added.
She advised women not to rush into leaving their homes without proper preparation, adding that economic realities often make separation more difficult than expected.
