A woman has reportedly been left emotional after her husband refused to include her in an international travel application following a long-running disagreement over changing her surname after marriage.
The story was shared online by a lady who claimed the incident involved a couple in her church.
According to her narration, the wife allegedly refused for two years to adopt her husband’s surname or process a new international passport bearing his family name despite repeated requests from him.
She explained that the husband eventually stopped bringing up the issue until a recent international opportunity surfaced through his workplace.
The post read:
“A woman in my church refused to change to her husband’s surname for 2 years after marriage.”
“The man kept begging her to process a new international passport with his name, but she refused and insisted she wanted to continue using her father’s name.”
The narrator added that things changed after the man’s office reportedly approved a foreign trip that allowed him to travel with his wife.
According to her, the woman suddenly became interested in changing her surname and processing a new passport quickly.
“Eventually, the man got tired and stopped talking about it. But when an international opportunity came up at the man’s workplace and he was allowed to travel with his wife, Madam suddenly started begging to do the surname change and process a new passport quickly.”
However, the husband allegedly refused to reconsider, insisting he no longer cared about the matter.
“The man’s response now is: ‘I don’t care again. I won’t include you in my application.’”
The woman was said to have broken down in tears and reportedly sought help from their church pastor to intervene in the matter.
“Now the woman has been crying and telling Pastor to help her beg him.”
The story has since triggered massive reactions online, with Nigerians debating whether women should be obligated to adopt their husbands’ surnames after marriage or retain their maiden names for personal and professional reasons.
