Nigerian media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has opened up about a heartbreaking relationship experience that changed the way she approaches gift-giving in romantic relationships.
During a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, where she hosted reality TV star Beauty Tukura, Makinwa revealed that she no longer buys gifts for men she is dating because of an incident that happened while she was an undergraduate.
The actress explained that she once spent her university school fees to give her then-boyfriend a memorable birthday celebration. According to her, the man, who was 10 years older than her, enjoyed the expensive treat, but she later discovered that he was being unfaithful.
Makinwa said the painful discovery left her deeply hurt and affected the way she views expressing love through gifts.
Recounting the experience, she said:
“I stopped buying men gifts after I dated a man who was 10 years older than me. I spent my university semester’s school fees to celebrate his birthday and took him to an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island.
“He ordered everything on the menu. When we got home…there was another woman in his house. That broke me.”
The media personality noted that the experience became a turning point for her, as she decided to be more cautious about making major sacrifices for romantic partners.
