“I found out her father had died that exact night” — Teacher recounts heartbreaking incident

A teacher has recounted a heartbreaking incident from 2021 involving a secondary school student whose refusal to follow her father to an ATM was followed by a devastating family tragedy.

The teacher, who was teaching at a school in Ikorodu, Lagos, said the girl was initially brought for admission into JSS 3 despite being unable to read a JSS 1 textbook.

After raising concerns with his boss, the teacher was asked to provide private lessons for the girl at her home twice a week for N15,000.

Girl refused to learn ATM operation

The teacher said that during one of the lessons, the girl’s father asked her to accompany him down the street to learn how to use an ATM.

According to the teacher, the girl refused and complained of hunger and a headache despite pleas from both her father and the teacher.

The teacher said, “I even gave her ₦200 to buy something to eat, but she bluntly refused to move.”

The following Thursday, the teacher visited the family’s home after noticing that the girl was absent from school, only to discover that her father had died that night after going to the ATM alone.

Widow left with just N20,000

The teacher said the widow later disclosed that N450,000, which represented her business capital, was in her late husband’s bank account.

According to the account, the man’s younger brother collected the ATM card and allegedly gave the widow only N20,000, claiming the remaining money was needed for burial preparations.

The teacher further alleged that within two weeks, the uncle sold the family house and moved the widow and her daughter into a small room at the backyard.

The teacher said the experience remained painful, particularly because the girl had refused to accompany her father to learn how to use the ATM that night.
