Media personality Tolulope Oniru, popularly known as Toolz, has defended her recent comments about relationships with in-laws after her viral interview sparked discussions online.
While speaking with Morayo Afolabi Brown, Toolz reflected on her 10-year marriage to her pilot husband and advised people planning to get married not to proceed with the union if their partner’s parents do not accept them.
Following the reactions to her remarks, Toolz took to Instagram to further explain her position, maintaining that she still stands by what she said during the interview.
She explained that when a partner’s parents do not like their child’s spouse, it often becomes a difficult situation that the incoming partner may struggle to overcome.
Toolz clarified that she does not mean in-laws must completely adore their child’s partner or support every decision they make, but she believes mutual respect should exist.
She wrote:
“I’ve seen the different takes on what I said on @themorayoshow and I still fully stand by it.
I genuinely believe it’s important that your partner’s parents like you. Or at the very least, respect you.
Because if they don’t, it’s a battle the incoming partner rarely wins. Best-case scenario: your partner chooses you and ends up estranged from their parents. And while ‘it’s us against the world might sound romantic, that’s a heavy burden for any relationship to carry.
I’m not saying your in-laws have to adore you or agree with every decision you make absolutely. That’s unrealistic. But they should respect you, respect your relationship, and respect the decisions you and your partner make together.
Peace between your partner and their parents is a blessing. And when that peace extends to you as well, it makes life so much easier for everyone involved.
