A Nigerian man has recounted how he was allegedly arrested over a social media post after being invited to what he believed was a meeting to discuss a lucrative promotional deal.
The man, identified as @hintrovertt on X, said he initially welcomed the offer after someone contacted him about a long-term partnership that promised a substantial financial reward.
According to him, the individual first requested his rate card and sent him an invoice the following day without attempting to negotiate his charges. He explained that the proposed arrangement was presented as a long-term partnership rather than the usual promotional deals that involve payment per post or monthly campaigns.
He added that he later provided his bank details after being informed that the company would transfer the money directly into his account.
However, two days later, the prospective client contacted him again, claiming that a manager wanted to meet him physically to discuss the partnership.
Although he was not living in Lagos at the time, @hintrovertt said he told the individual that he was in the city. He subsequently received a meeting location and arrived the following day, dressed formally for the appointment.
Recounting what happened, he said he met the man at the designated location and began discussing the proposed deal while ordering a milkshake. He claimed the man had assured him that he would take care of the bills.
According to the X user, four men dressed in corporate attire approached them during the conversation. He initially assumed they were members of the team involved in the proposed partnership.
However, he claimed the men identified themselves as police officers and presented their identification before the person who invited him allegedly instructed them to take him away.
The man said he pleaded for permission to make a phone call and contacted his brother, who promised to meet him at the police station.
Upon arriving at the station, he was reportedly shown the social media post that had triggered the incident.
He said he was taken aback by the development because he did not believe the post was defamatory. According to his account, the individual involved was unhappy about the criticism and negative reactions he had received online.
@hintrovertt further alleged that he was asked to delete the post and pay ₦3 million in damages.
He explained that his brother eventually arrived at the station with a lawyer. Following discussions and pleas, he claimed the amount he eventually paid was reduced to approximately ₦400,000.
Reflecting on the experience, the X user admitted that he had underestimated the people involved, acknowledging that the incident had taught him a difficult lesson about his activities on social media.
“I once got arrested because of a post I made on this app. I thought I was smart, but these people were actually smarter than me,” he wrote.
He also disclosed that the experience had changed his approach to online commentary, particularly when it comes to participating in campaigns against people he does not personally know.
“Since that day, you can never catch me running an agenda against people I don’t know,” he added.
