A distressed Ghanaian living in South Africa has revealed that he is currently in hiding at a relative’s house following violent attacks by locals.
The man, who hails from Takoradi in Ghana, told reporters that he has already suffered physical assaults and humiliation at the hands of South Africans and fears returning home due to the trauma he has endured.
“I am from Takoradi, and I have gone into hiding at a brother’s house. The South Africans have already beaten me, but I will not return to Ghana even if they kill me. I have suffered too much, and I will not go back to Ghana to suffer again,” he said in an emotional statement.
According to him, the xenophobic tensions in South Africa have escalated in recent weeks, leaving foreign nationals, particularly Ghanaians, in fear for their lives.
Many Ghanaians have reported similar attacks, with businesses being forcibly shut down and residents being chased from neighborhoods by groups wielding sticks, stones, and other weapons.
The situation has drawn attention from the Ghanaian government, which has been coordinating the evacuation of citizens affected by xenophobic attacks.
Many affected individuals have expressed frustration over the lack of immediate protection while abroad, and some are pleading for more support to ensure their safety.
