Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he is happy that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu became Nigeria’s president, despite maintaining that he won the 2023 presidential election.
Obi made the statement while reflecting on the 2023 election and what he believes was God’s plan for Nigeria, saying Tinubu’s emergence was part of a bigger purpose for the country.
Speaking about the election, Obi maintained that he won but was not declared the winner.
“I won in 2023 and I was not declared winner. I’m happy that Tinubu became the president,” he said.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu winner of the 2023 presidential election, with Atiku Abubakar coming second and Obi finishing third. Obi has, however, consistently maintained that the outcome did not reflect what he believed was the actual result of the election.
Explaining why he was still happy with Tinubu’s emergence, Obi said he believed the development was part of a divine plan for Nigeria.
“God designed it that Buhari will be president and that after him Tinubu would come,” he stated.
The former Anambra State governor further suggested that the developments under the current administration were exposing those responsible for problems within the country’s system.
“God wanted to show that he’s God. That’s why what is happening now is happening so that those destroying the system will be exposed. He wanted to open the eyes of Nigerians,” Obi said.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, is now preparing for another presidential contest in 2027 as the candidate of the NDC.
