The IDF is preparing for an extended stay in the new security zone along the Lebanese front, one that could last for months and even years. Senior military officials say that, as far as the army is concerned, troops will remain in the area “until long-term security for residents of the north is guaranteed.”
At this stage, Israel has been forced to restrict its operations across Lebanon, with an emphasis on the Beirut area, due to pressure from the US, which reportedly accepted Iranian demands on the issue as part of the negotiations. At the same time, the IDF says it is conducting extensive operations in southern Lebanon, with the main focus on Bint Jbeil, a Shiite stronghold of the Hezbollah terrorist organization where Hassan Nasrallah delivered his “spider web” speech.
Security officials assess that the operation in Bint Jbeil will continue for several more days and is expected to conclude thisweek. According to those assessments, of roughly 150 terrorists operating in the area, about 100 have been killed, but dozens more are still active on the ground, alongside attempts to reinforce them with additional operatives.
The IDF says the area was not dealt with as part of Operation Northern Arrows, and that as a result, extensive terrorist infrastructure remains there, including operational apartments, warehouses and basements used to store weapons.
Meanwhile, Israel intends to conduct the negotiations expected to begin Tuesday, between Israel and Lebanon. The assessment is that even if the Lebanese government wants to disarm Hezbollah, its ability to do so is limited. Accordingly, the IDF is currently deployed along anti-tank missile lines, about 8 to 10 kilometers (5 to 6 miles) from the border, and does not intend to withdraw until the security of residents of the north is guaranteed.
