Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and founder of the Take It Back Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to provide free education for Nigerians if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Sowore made the promise on Monday through a post on his official X account while reacting to the recent controversy surrounding the proposed increase in fees for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO).
The Federal Ministry of Education had earlier announced an increase in examination fees, with the cost reportedly rising from N27,500 to N50,000. The decision triggered public backlash, leading to the suspension of the planned increment.
Addressing the issue, Sowore said an administration under his leadership would remove all public examination fees and ensure access to free education at all levels.
In his statement, he said: “LET’S USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW YOU, AT A GLANCE, WHAT OUR EDUCATION POLICY WILL LOOK LIKE AFTER 2027.
“No government under a #Sowore2027 administration will ever ask your child to pay WAEC, NECO, or any other public examination fee. Education will be free because knowledge is a right, not a privilege.
“Our revolutionary education policy guarantees free, high-quality education from early childhood through university, backed by modern classrooms, virtual learning, well-paid teachers, student grants, and equal opportunities for every Nigerian child.
“This is not a promise of politics. It is a revolutionary commitment to build a nation where no child’s future is determined by poverty.”
The AAC presidential hopeful added that his proposed education reforms would focus on improving learning standards, expanding opportunities, and ensuring that financial challenges do not prevent Nigerian children from accessing quality education.
