Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Debo Ogundoyin, has weighed in on the security situation in the state, calling on the authorities to do everything necessary to secure the release of the abducted students, pupils, and teachers from their schools last month, news.ng reports.
Hon. Ogundoyin, during plenary on Thursday, explained the complexity faced by some state governors in situations such as this, urging members of the House and the public to remain calm.
He said, “Everything that is necessary for them to bring these children and teachers back.” It was up to you: would you negotiate with terrorists if terrorists ask for weapons, they ask for money, they ask for concessions on future laws of this land as part of their ransom.
“If you are the governor, would you accept those ransoms? Would you accept for those people to be integrated into that community? We don’t know the details.”
He said the terrorists would be more emboldened if authorities entered into negotiations with them.
“So please, let’s be sensitive and calm. You do not know the details. The more you negotiate with these people, the more you are going to embolden them.”
It would be recalled that about 39 students and pupils, as well as seven teachers, were abducted during coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026.
Also, news broke on Wednesday morning that the immediate past Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu’s sister, Mrs Olaide Busayo Adegoke, along with her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, was abducted in Ibadan while she was taking them to school.
