US President Donald Trump has admitted he is not Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, “favourite person” after an airstrike killed his father.
“I would say I’m not his favourite person. But, that being said, he’s probably a professional in some circles. He has a very good reputation, actually”, Trump said.
He added that although he doesn’t want to meet Khamenei he would be “honoured to meet him” and would possibly do so if a deal was made.
“But if we make a deal, it’s possible that I would meet him. I’d be okay with that”, Trump said.
Iran’s former supreme leader Ali Khamenei — Mojtaba’s father — was among those killed in the strikes, while Mojtaba himself was thought to have been seriously injured.
The president’s comments come after Israel said it will continue operations in Lebanon despite a ceasefire and Lebanese residents forced to flee will not be able to return, Israeli defence minister Israel Katz said on Thursday.
The ceasefire contingent on Hezbollah’s surrender had been announced in a joint statement after representatives from all three countries met on Tuesday and Wednesday.
