The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State, Muhammad Gadaka, has apologised and withdrawn his controversial statement telling women to divorce their husbands if they were prevented from voting for the ruling party.
Gadaka had earlier sparked outrage after reportedly telling women that if their husbands stopped them from voting for the APC, they should leave the marriage.
He went further by offering to pay the dowry of any woman who divorced her husband over the issue and marry her himself.
However, following the backlash generated by the statement, the Yobe APC chairman has now apologised and claimed that he was only joking.
“I withdraw my earlier statement that any woman whose husband prevents her from voting for the APC should end her marriage and that I would marry her. I apologise to the public; I only said it as a joke.”
His latest statement has continued to generate reactions on social media, with some Nigerians questioning why such a comment was made in the first place.
