An Italian fighter jet operating on behalf of NATO has successfully intercepted and destroyed what officials identified as a suspected Russian Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAV, within Lithuanian airspace.
According to reports from Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre, the UAV entered the nation’s airspace on Tuesday from Belarus and was subsequently destroyed near the village of Pratkunai, in Lithuania’s central region, north of Kaunas, the country’s second-largest city.
Lithuania’s Defence Minister, Robertas Kaunas, disclosed via social media that the UAV contained explosive materials.
The wreckage of the aircraft was undergoing analysis to determine whether its origin was Russian or that of another country.
The deployment of the Italian fighter jet demonstrated “the significance of the Atlantic alliance” and “the implications of maintaining allied status”, Kaunas said following his consultation with personnel stationed at the site.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the incident as part of an established pattern of “aggression and provocation” directed against Europe.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul attributed responsibility to Russia, declaring that NATO member states would demonstrate unwavering resolve.
Russian officials have offered no immediate statement concerning the incident, according to Al Jazeera.
The interception of the UAV over Lithuanian territory occurred following Russia’s deployment of flares towards a Danish military helicopter conducting surveillance operations on a Russian warship in the Baltic Sea on Monday.
In a statement published on X on Tuesday, Poland’s Defence Minister, Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, asserted that “the events of recent days substantiate that Russian conduct jeopardises the security of all European nations”.
These escalations followed numerous Russian UAV operations on Sunday, prompting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to announce increased assistance for Ukraine.
Russian UAVs targeted a railway transport facility near the Polish border, moments after a contingent of current and former dignitaries from the United Kingdom, the United States and Europe had passed through the terminal.
