Portugal defender Rúben Dias has thrown his support behind captain Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism that emerged after the Seleção’s disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Manchester City centre-back dismissed the backlash surrounding Ronaldo’s performance, insisting the criticism directed at the veteran forward is nothing more than background noise for the squad.
“It’s not a problem for us. It’s insignificant, just a bit of noise. It’s part of the game,” Dias said when asked about the criticism that followed Portugal’s failure to secure victory in Houston.
Dias rejects focus on Ronaldo
Ronaldo, who became the first player to appear at six World Cups, was unable to find the net as Portugal were held by an impressive DR Congo side.
However, Dias stressed that responsibility for the result belongs to the entire team and not just one individual.
“Above all, the criticism isn’t aimed at just one player. Cristiano is the centre of attention, but I think all of us are under scrutiny,” Dias said.
“Beyond what I’ve already said, I don’t think anything out of the ordinary is happening. It’s always been like this since I’ve been here, and I think it will continue to be. In the end, it’s just noise. We shut it out and focus on ourselves.”
Portugal squad remains united
Dias also moved to dismiss speculation suggesting tensions exist within the Portugal camp, particularly rumours involving Ronaldo and midfielder Bruno Fernandes.
The 28-year-old insisted the squad remains fully united as they prepare for the remainder of their World Cup campaign.
“For all of us, it’s not an issue. We’re united in the belief that difficulties are positive and that it’s through them we’ll see what we’re made of,” he said.
“We see them as an opportunity to create something positive. My mind doesn’t go in that direction. I don’t pay attention when those things are thrown at us. I don’t think any of us do. It shouldn’t even be an issue.”
Defender sees setback as learning opportunity
Despite the underwhelming result against DR Congo, Dias believes early challenges could ultimately benefit Portugal as they target a deep run in the tournament.
“You never look for perfection in this kind of competition,” Dias added.
“I think the sooner challenges appear, the better. You only win if the team has the ability to keep improving game after game. I don’t expect perfect scenarios. The most important thing is to stay grounded.”
Portugal will look to register their first win of the tournament when they face Uzbekistan in a Group K action on June 23.
