Retired staff members of Ebonyi State University have publicly expressed frustration over years of unpaid pensions and gratuities, saying some of their colleagues have died while waiting for their entitlements.
Speaking about their plight, one of the retirees said the situation had become increasingly painful, revealing that many former workers had lost their lives while others were still battling health challenges.
“Many of us have d!£d, up to 209 as of the time we recorded it. Several are still dy!ng, while others are still sick. It’s very he@rtbreaking that after years of suffering, the government will refuse to pay us our pensions and gratuities.”
The retirees said their prolonged wait for their financial entitlements has left many of them struggling after dedicating years of their lives to serving the institution.
One of the retired staff members, who is now blind, also shared his personal experience, saying he began working at the university on February 17, 1992.
According to him, he retired from service on September 1, 2025, but had yet to receive his pension or gratuity.
The retiree further disclosed that he became blind while he was still in active service, making his current situation even more difficult as he continues to wait for the benefits owed to him.
The retirees are calling for urgent attention to their situation and payment of their outstanding pensions and gratuities after years of service.
