Kakamega, Kenya: Maureen Ajami, the sister of the late Joe Mudukiza, a sickle cell warrior and advocate, shocked them in such a big way because he had recovered and even been discharged from the hospital.
In 2024, Mudukiza publicly shared his wish to travel to Belgium for euthanasia, saying he could not afford treatment for sickle cell, a revelation that sparked support from many Kenyans.
On July 2, 2026, Mudikiza sadly died, leaving his family, friends, and supporters mourning his passing with a lot of pain and glowing tributes.
Many have mourned him as a man who fought courageously to live and inspired other sickle cell warriors despite enduring immense pain himself.
How were Mudukiza’s last moments
Speaking to NGBREAKINGNEWS, Mudukiza’s sister Muareen Ajamih said that he had been ailing for some time and was admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), and last week on Friday he was discharged to go home, and he was still okay even on Monday.

“On Tuesday, he seemingly started losing track and was very tired and weak; we were told that it could be the side effects of the medicines. He asked to eat fruits and Indomie,”she said.
“On Wednesday, July 1, my sister realised that he was late in waking up and when he did wake up, breathing was a problem, and we assumed that it was asthma because he was asthmatic,” she added
The condition of the young man deteriorated badly, and he was rushed to the Hope Care facility to be stablised; he was getting oxygen, and his blood pressure was very high. They tried to find the reason, but after one hour he was not responding; they declared him dead at 3.20pm.
Why was Mudikiza taken to Kakamega right away?
After the young sickle cell anemia warrior died, the family asked to fork out a staggering KSh 17000 so that his body could be preserved and KSh 7000 to take him to the morgue. After doing some calculations Maureen thought that it was better to take his body to a local morgue in Kakamega.

“We would have spent KSh 40,000 to transport the body to Kakamega as well, and I chose to hire a hearse and took the body home,” she said.
The fire is in dire need of help, and they are requesting help from Kenyans to give the young man a befitting burial.

Another story revealed how Kenyans came out in large numbers to mourn the late Mudukiza, who died after a long battle with sickle cell anaemia.
Just two days before his death was announced, Mudukiza shared a hopeful Facebook post and made a heartfelt request to his followers.
Kenyans returned to the post after they learnt of his death, saying that they had believed he was recovering and were left shocked by the heartbreaking news.
