Kano State was among 15 states that did not report revenue generated by their local government areas in 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
The data, published by National Bureau of Statistics, showed that only 21 of Nigeria’s 36 states reported revenue generated by their local governments during the year.
The 21 states recorded a combined N65.82bn, with Lagos topping the list at N16.30bn.
Jigawa followed with N10.04bn, while Gombe recorded N8.92bn. Kebbi generated N4.94bn, while Kwara and Ondo recorded N3.43bn each.
Other states on the list were Kogi, N3.12bn; Bauchi, N2.52bn; Ogun, N2.07bn; Edo, N2.05bn; Katsina, N1.80bn; Taraba, N1.70bn; Cross River, N1.45bn; and Niger, N1.05bn.
Enugu reported N786.08m, followed by Borno with N666.55m, Ekiti with N608.77m, Imo with N521.84m and Kaduna with N393.46m.
Sokoto and Ebonyi recorded the lowest figures at N10.05m and N1.09m respectively.
Kano, which has 44 local government areas, was not listed among the states with reported local government revenue for the year.
The data, however, do not establish that Kano’s local governments generated no revenue during the period. They indicate that no figure for the state appeared among the 21 states reporting in the dataset.
The omission raises questions about the collection, documentation and reporting of internally generated revenue by Kano’s local governments.
Local councils typically derive revenue from sources including market fees, business-related levies, motor park charges, tenement rates and other locally administered payments.
The absence of a reported figure makes it difficult to establish from the dataset how much Kano’s 44 local governments generated from such sources in 2025.
The Kano State Government and relevant local government authorities would therefore need to clarify whether revenue was generated during the period and, if so, why the figures were not reflected in the NBS data.
The figures also highlight significant differences in reported local government revenue across the states, with Lagos’ N16.30bn accounting for almost a quarter of the N65.82bn reported by the 21 states.
