The Kano State Hisbah Board has commenced medical screening for 3,000 prospective couples ahead of a state-backed mass wedding programme aimed at supporting vulnerable residents.
The exercise, scheduled to begin on Monday, is a prerequisite for participation in the mass wedding initiative designed to unite 1,500 men and 1,500 women across the state.
Deputy Commander General of the board, Mujahideen Aminuddeen, disclosed on Sunday that intending couples from 24 local government areas have been directed to report to designated Hisbah offices for the screening.
The affected councils include Rogo, Wudil, Tudun Wada, Warawa, Kibiya, Dawakin Tofa, Garun Malam, Kura, Dambatta, Karaye, Tsanyawa, Minjibir, Rimin Gado, Shanono, Kabo, Tofa, Rano, Bebeji, Ajingi, Gwarzo, Sumaila, Kiru, Takai, and Madobi.
Aminuddeen said the screening would cover critical health checks such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, genotype compatibility, drug use, and pregnancy tests for female applicants.
He stressed that only candidates who pass the medical evaluation would be cleared to participate in the programme, underscoring the government’s resolve to ensure healthy and sustainable marriages.
The mass wedding scheme, earlier unveiled by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, targets widows, divorcees, orphans, and low-income earners as part of broader social intervention efforts.
Under the initiative, each groom is to receive ₦100,000 as dowry support, while couples will be provided with essential household items including beds, mattresses, wardrobes, and food supplies.
In addition, beneficiaries are expected to receive ₦100,000 grants to support small-scale businesses, a move officials say is intended to promote economic stability within newly formed families.
Authorities say the programme is designed not only to facilitate marriages but also to curb social vices, reduce economic hardship, and strengthen community cohesion across Kano State.
